I guess WinXP has the option of installing on FAT32 n NTFS....
but by default it prompts to format partition into a NTFS one ... so if one has not taken proper care during installation process the drive would be partitioned as NTFS ..( i guess the OS CD which comes with Laptops has some kind of custom installation .. i doubt if it might ask for FAT or NTFS option..)

is it true that in order to install Linux on a laptop/desktop which comes pre-loaded with WinXP i have to format the ENTIRE hard drive?
try fips. don't know if it works on XP, but you could give it a try.
do you have an option of installing XP on either FAT32 or NTFS ? 'Cause if it is FAT* then fips ought to work...
