While we are on this topic, there are now wireless routers in the market which have a USB port in order to attach a pen drive or a USB HDD. This can be shared by all the wireless users. This can be very good for setting up a tiny local server for file sharing. Netgear has such features in their n600 series routers. With no internet access provided, it can be very good for sharing Linux distro ISOs or multimedia content.
What is the cost of N600?
I have been looking at the Buffalo models that come with dd-wrt firmware 1. WZR-HP-G300NH, 2. WHR-HP-G300N, 3. WHR-HP-GN http://www.buffalotech.com/comparison-charts/wireless/routers-and-access-points/
Please share your experience with any of the above?
n600 is a series with some models in it. It is dual band for 2.4 Ghz and 5.x Ghz. The highest one is available in Mumbai for about 9K. I had made inquires for a client but since the price was high and the client did not require the usb sharing part, he went for one of the n300 models.
The usb sharing feature is very nice and if price is not the matter, it can make a nice small file sharing server. It has separate access settings for owners and guests who use the wifi. The owner/guest feature for LAN access is available even in the n300 series. I had seen this setting in the n300 wifi that I had setup. So you give only net access to the guest, no LAN.
