Both are related. Increase in business is an absolute goal for most. Being near the top in google results _gets_ you more business,
anecdotally
speaking. It's one of the aspects for most online businesses. Google
adwords
wouldn't have taken off in such a big way had this not been the case (that's SEM, btw).
I don't know if it's true any longer, but a long time back when N.Delhi had water scarcity, some people started fitting micropumps on their municipal pipelines under the pretext that they weren't getting enough pressure. Within a short time, everyone in their localities had attached micropumps, so that they didn't lose out.
End result, lots of wastage of electricity (leading to what - more theft?) and the same quantity of water as before.
OK, this is only anecdotal, but may apply to everyone indulging in SEO.
Hmmm.. but then.. say, if you don't indulge in SEO, you are the one whose taps will go dry! ;) Necessary evil! we may call it...
If your site is useful but not popular, how do you think it will become popular without the "mini-pump".. esp when everyone else runs a "mini-pump"..
But i was wondering how is it an ethical issue! :) Its just a collective behavioural and stereotypical problem. Either everyone remove their "pumps".. or try winning the rat-race together..!
I think in the current circumstances, any new online business that comes up needs SEO to provide the "escape velocity".. If its worth its salt.. its going to get into orbit and never need it again.. If not.. TATA ---- deep down into the Pacific Ocean...
