Instead of a society. Is there any type of organization under which doing social work using IT comes in. Maybe we can go for that. The statutory requirements might be easier for that. I personally think we have enough people on this list who can and would donate to the LUG and we can hire professional to mind the statutory requirements.

Registering the lug as a society has come up several times before.
Lot of back ground work was done by Punit, Parag Mehta, Prakash Advani, Nagarjuna, myself and others.
The only problem in our path so far has been the unavailability of suitable persons to see this registration through. I am not aware the processes involved or the time line that we would be speaking
of, so
cannot comment further, but anyone else who knows about this should probably outline it on this list and then maybe we can find people
to
volunteer for the various tasks involved.
Background: (please note that luggers have refrained from putting individual names to this affair. However i feel that we have to bury this and carry forward so I am putting names and figures (that were given to me)).
I had volunteered two yrs ago. The registration process costs btwn Rs.7k to 10k. Prakash Advani had a contact who said he would do it in Rs.5k. So Prakash took the papers (memorandum and articles of association, preliminary office bearers's names and addresses, location of the body etc.). Nothing happened. The (main) problem was money owed to LUG was never given to LUG. The money was generated by Dr. Nagarjuna, Philip Tellis and other LUG members conducting a GNU/Linux Seminar for TISL, and TISL donated Rs.30,000. The money was in the custody of Prakash Shetty, who AFAIK never handed over the money or any account of it's use. When the registration process was going on we had met at TIFR and I had specifically queried Prakash Shetty about the money. He told me that he would hand it over to Parag Mehta. I checked with Parag several times subsequently. The money never came.
Other potential problems are 1 Permanent address 2 Office bearers 3 Elections 4 Accounts 5 Audits 6 Statutory records 7 Drafting memorandum and articles of association
Problems 5 & 6 are the worst. Statutory requirements will make office bearers liable to legal proceedings if the statuatory requirements are not met. Audits and reviews happen three yrs later - long after the previous office bearers have departed. So any oversight in the past will have repurcussions on current office bearers.
Registering a NPA is relatively easy. Running and maintaining it is the hard part it requires REAL time and effort. It is not a part time hobby and can have you visiting the court.
So if luggers are still for it lets contribute REAL money. Saswata will have custody (having volunteered for accounting). I will take up the registration. I will also put my money where my mouth is and contribute Rs.1000/- for this. We will need an address for the permanent office (note: court summons can be an ugly decoration on your door), and a couple of volunteers for tasks like typing and printing the MOU, being the Seceretary, Chairperson, treasurer, attending court, etc.
Any takers?
