I run Debian, and I don't have a problem with xmms and MP3 files. My system plays them just fine.
I didn't say anything to the contrary. I'm talking about redhat's distribution policy. They're the only distro with this problem, and unfortunately, have the largest market share among newbies.
As far as newbies are concerned, redhat is linux.
