Is there an app that allows you to channel the audio from audio out to your
sound out, so that the music you are playing can also be heard by your chat buddies without taking the speaker to mic route, or is this hardware specific?
Its called Stereo Mix in Windows. The alternative seems to be mentioned here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PulseAudio#Recording example using PulseAudio and Audacity
