Dear Editor,
This is in response to the article "No Free Lunches for Me" written by Charles Assisi, Times of India, 31th August 2006.
A few suggestions. 1) The Company made it's hughe pile of money not by selling proprietory software but by illegal, monopolistic and predatory tactics, and is currently paying a daily fine in Europe. In comparison Free software companies of similiar ages seem to be doing better than their closed counterparts both in terms of revenue and valuation. 2) In most cases it is possible to make much more money with free software than with proprietory software because u dont pay anyone for the gpld code most of the time. 3) In several areas which are of critical importance one will simply not be able to use proprietory software eg. software in alchol breath analysers, voting machines, space exploration, defence. Use of prop software in alchol analyser and voting machines was /is being challenged in the US courts, and an injunction obtained in the case of breath analyser when the company refused to disclose code.
