Workshop on Standardisation and Localisation (Indian Languages) on Free/Opensource Software,
A Workshop on "Standardisation and Localisation (Indian Languages) on Free/Opensource Software, as part of the Indix II project at C-DAC, Mumbai is being organized on
Friday,19th March 2004 10am to 6pm at the Lecture Hall Centre for Development and Advanced Computing (formerly NCST), Gulmohar Cross Road No. 9, Juhu Mumbai- 400049.
Objectives of the Workshop:
1. To bring forth the efforts on Localisation made so far on free software platform: Computing, not just interface, fonts and printing.
2. To apprise the people of impact of localisation on free/opensource software platform
3. To make the people aware about unicode standards and its implications
4. To make software resources freely available to and from the opensource community
5. To show the future trends in development, deployment of and building community for free software in Indian Languages
6. To invite public participation in the huge task of localisation which includes a small part of translation too.
7. To create a collaborative platform for synergising the Free/OpenSource software development in official, academic,volunteer and informal sectors for the benefit of the people of the country We expect this Workshop to be a starting point of intense collaborative activity of localisation with official support.
Several products on Free/Opensource shall be on the display. A number of eminent speakers from the OSS are expected to speak in the Workshop. The Workshop will also have a panel discussion followed by open house discussions.

2.Prof. Jitendra Shah (VJTI and INDICTRANS) : Impact of Unicode and Localisation of free software
3.Shri Nagarjun (HBCSE,TIFR and FSF India): Building of community of Free Software and help from research and industrial institutions, scopes and limitations of paid and voluntary work
4. Dr. Veena Dixit (IIT): Issues of Linguistics in localisation
5.Shri Rishikesh Ranjan (Deputy Secretary , Gov Of Maharashtra) : Government policy on Unicode and Free/OpenSource Software Prof. R K Joshi( C-DAC): Concluding remarks - Role of Language in new technology and communication : convergence of Script and Phonetics
From 1400hrs to 1500hrs Demonstrations :IndiX 11 languages enabled (15 Minutes), Inlinux Hindi interface (10 Minutes), gnubhaaratii Marathi, Gujarati interface and applications (10 Minutes) ,Tamil Linux (5 Minutes),
15:15hrs to 1600hr : Panel discussion ( Chaired by Rajeev Kamath IBM, USA) Shri Pradeep Deshpande (Indictrans): Problems in Technical translation in Marathi Shri Nirav Mehta (magnet-i): Problems of Translations in Gujarati Shri G. Karunakar (IndLinux) : Problems of Translation in Hindi
1600 hrs to 1800hrs: onwards Open house discussion and feedback (Chaired by Dr G Sivakumar IIT,subject to confirmation) with concluding remarks by organizers. The Workshop will be open for all registered participants. Participation is free. We request your participation in the Workshop.
