A recent example is the pathetic implementation of FYJC online admissions in Mumbai by the Maharashtra state government. (http://fyjc.org.in/) The first page is a defacto advertisement promoting the product of a single specific company.
Dear scientists/list,
FYJC ( http://fyjc.org.in/ ) - The 11th standard online Admission system is forcing those who want to join 11th to use Internet Explorer .
This forces the user to install internet explorer on his machine which make it very hard for the user if he uses GNU/Linux system which we are/have motives to propagate .
The FYJC site is maintained by OASIS team of MKCL ( Maharashtra Knowledge Corporation Limited ) which is under the Department of Higher and Technical Education, Government of Maharashtra, India . Being a Publicly funded organisation and in the education sector it's quite ironic that the site is forcing the users to use a browser. This whole issue has been discussed in the mailing list of ILUG-Bombay http://mm.ilug-bom.org.in/pipermail/linuxers/Week-of-Mon-20090622/067798.htm...
Please take time to read the entire thread . It is quite a negative impression people have on the education + Govt + foss :(
I am writing to all of you because this issue in my opinion concerns NRCFOSS situated at AU-KBC research centre which aims at spreading FOSS in the Education sector with public funds. I also think NRCFOSS at AU-KBC Research centre should play an important role in ensuring that all education related public funded organisations which forces "vendor lock in" .
Thanks for taking time to read this mail . Hope this changes things .
