Copy new kernel to other m/c's /boot dir copy System.map to /boot copy complete modules in /lib/modules/2.x.x Do i need to run depmod?
Probably.
put new kernel in /etc/lilo.conf and run lilo Boot m/c with ne kernel.
Just copy the kernel image somewhere in the new pc and modify /etc/lilo.conf accordingly. and run lilo -v.
You also need the System.map for symbols, and the modules (unless you have a static kernel).
and if the configuration of the new pc is different from the one for which you compiled the kernel. then you have to compile it again.
The point of this exercise is to compile a kernel on one machine for another machine which is probably too [expletive deleted] to compile a kernel. Isn't it?
No... I need to recompile and upgrade kernel for some new functionality... And it need's to be done on a production server. I dont want to install any make, gcc etc. stuff on the server so will compile it on my desktop and trasfer it to server and reboot... and voila it should work... so want to just check, if I am not missing any step as servers are in US and I in India... :-) Cannot afford guffup and downtime...
