Why do you consider SEO as a violation of ethics ? Anyone who has a website is putting it up not because he likes html coding, but because he (or she) wants others to see it.....the more the better. SEO is a process where the website is optimised and brought to the attention of search engines, without which the chance of anyone finding out about the website is slim.
Please tell why you feel Linux users should not use SEO techniques.
There is a difference between SEO for ensuring the search engines know what your webpage is about, and SEO for increasing your pagerank to increase your ad revenue.
Increasing page ranking is not for increasing advt revenue. It is so that people will come to your site and see what you want them to see. If you (say) the solution for migrating entire enterprises from Microsoft platform to Open Source, then you want that page and solution ranked to the top of the page rather than come on the 4th page since the user is not likely to go beyond 2nd page anyway. That is what SEO is all about.
Usual meaning of the term and requests pertain to the later category.
I do not think so. Much of the SEO work that you need to do on any page is quiet standard, ethical and allowed. Only few of the people do things like repeated cross-linking to get their page on the top.
Google usually downgrades pageranks for sites using unethical means of SEO as you are no doubt aware.
Again, you do not need to use unethical means to get their page on the top. Google is only going to get you down if you have done something really serious to get you down. If that was the standard case, then Google would need much much larger army petrol and the SEO industry would not exist.
Not everyone on this list is a business entrepreneur, and this is a free world.
You do not have to be a business enterpreneur to use SEO. Even NGOs use it. forget others, sourceforge uses SEO to ensure it stays on the top of the search list. So they too are unethical ? Yes it is a free world, and the OP was asking is there are software in our free software world that could help him in taking his page ranking and therefore internet visibility upwards. I do still do not see what is wrong with that or why he is wrong.
