I think Kumar has a point here. I also noticed this behavior, if login into KDE from GDM it won't let you shutdown directly (you have to log off from KDE and shutdown from gdm). The same with KDM and GNOME.

Can someone explain how does one log into KDE from GDM and vice versa? IMHO when one reaches the graphical login window, both KDM and GDM are active, except in the background as an rc.x process. A KDE or Gnome session is chosen either by default or by manually setting it and that session uses KDM or GDM for KDE and Gnome respectively.
