hello, can anyone on the list configure a laptop running debian to connect to the internet via a gprs phone. we are yet to purchase a phone so we can go in for a suitable one and the same goes for the service provider.
Hi
We use gprs from windows laptops and desktops. What you need is a good GPRS phone and connectivity. There are lots of issues in choosing the gprs phone (send me a mail offline or call me if you want details).
You also need to decide how the phone is going to connect to the laptop. The following methods are available :
1. Built-in IR port 2. USB IR Port (Rs. 1K) 3. Serial / USB wire (usually Rs 1-3K)
Before you buy the phone, make sure that you have the drivers available. You can get the details from the website of the phone manufacturer.
Once you configure the phone connectivity to the laptop, getting GPRS working is very easy. You need to only dial the specified number and profile from the kppp dialer. (eg. in Orange, use *99***1#).
In fact, I am planning to try the same thing on my laptop (in Linux). Should do it over the weekend.
