Now after doing 'sudo compiz-manager' I am able to move the cubes. Thanks for the tip. There is one little issue of title bars getting knocked off and even after closing compiz, I have to use the File -> Exit route instead of the close button on the title bar. Even after all this, there is resiidue in the task bar. It goes away only after logging out and relogging in.
Try "emerald --replace" or "gtk-window-decorator --replace" as a normal user (ie with su or sudo) (The gtk-window-decorator doesn't work that well for me. I get an extra white band near my panels. emerald works just fine.)
Further update. I ran sudo compiz-manager from the run dialog and as long as I am in compiz, everything is fine. I noticed that though each of my 4 desktops has different wallpapers, the cube shows 4 faces of the same desktop. I like the way windows can be dragged from one face to another.
There is a confusion between "Workspaces" & "Viewports". See this bug report: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/compiz/+bug/153322 Try setting the number of metacity workspaces to 1 (you can use gconf and navigate to /apps/metacity/general/num_workspaces). Then in the Compiz Settings Manager go to General Options >> Desktop Size set Horizontal Virtual Size to 4, Vertical Virtual Size to 1 and Number of Desktops to 1.
I think you are doing all this in Gnome. I have Kde, however I will look for equivalent settings. Thanks for the tips.
