Gnome 2.2 does supprort xft ... thats what I had been using on my old desktop. In fact the version of Gtk that I have right now also seems to support it, so that the sawfish decorations, dialog-boxes etc look very nice. Even some small gtk-based tools like grun use those features.
Seems like specific apps need to be compiled with the correct support. Wonder if recompiling Ayttm would help! The xft version of MozillaFirebird is too sluggish to be useful!
Also found a package called libgdkxft0 in Debian, but that is meant for Gtk 1.2 :(
