i want to install debian on this system and use it for some basic wordprocessing, mail and stuff like that.. i would also like to use X, maybe with a light window manager like fvwm or flvwm. i've read a document at http://www.angieandthor.de/thor/boxes/endeavour.htm. i want to know if the SLIP based install is feasable using a computer running winXP and apache.

Debian is your answer indeed. I am running Debian testing on a Panasonic CF-71 with a PII. With 16MB, X will be painfull. Why do you require X? If you /want/ to use it, you may probably have to look out for an older version. I think you should try an older distro as your hardware are old and probably some may even be depreciated from the newer ones.
I think it would be easier to install via an PCMCIA ethernet card, wouldnt it?
