That's strange. I too use Triband with my router IP as nameserver and apt-get works fine.
I observed a new strange behaviour. When I set the preference of the public DNS (of MTNL) among the first ones, Firefox functions normally and is able to fetch things. But ironically, Konqueror renders pages as if it known to be the most slowest browser. In, other words, this behaviour is seen when, /etc/resolv.conf looks like
nameserver 203.x.x.x nameserver 203.x.x.x nameserver 192.168.1.1
And when I changed the preference of the public DNS (of MTNL) to second, resulting the modem / router's address as the first, Konqueror proves its claim of being the fastest browser (and yes it is). In other words, this behaviour is seen when, /etc/resolv.conf looks like
nameserver 192.168.1.1 nameserver 203.x.x.x nameserver 203.x.x.x
I use Debian sid.
Thanks to satish from the list, I have the DVD ISOs (3) of Debian Etch, if you are interested, let me know offlist.
