you'll need to choose between Linux+Samba+SGI XFS + LDAP + Disk Quotas on one hand and Windows Storage Server 2003 on the other. consider cost + management ease as factors. Any HP / IBM server will do. If you already have an Active directory infrastructure, the windows option will be easier to implement.
Firewall..depends on ur risk perception.PIX is very good, fast firewall. so would be IPTables on a fast linux machine. Choose depending on the throughputs ur looking at.
