       I want to find the usage(data transfer) 

that is being done by my ethernet card using snmp. Any ideas of how to do it or any ideas of how to do it using other protocols or utilities ?

If you have root on the box, ntop, iptraf.... Install ucd-snmp (aka net-snmp), and get the data transfer through the ip mib. Use ssh and a script to cut out the relevant values from your ifconfig output. Monitor the switch that your machine is connected to.
