As far as I can tell, they aren't really using opensource tech. - their 'high-res' video content is downloadable in mpeg format and the online streaming version uses a flash streaming embed from blip.tv (although blip.tv now supports Ogg Theora, they are not using it). Even though I find this Al-Jazeera / CC news fascinating since we run a completely FOSS video archive of our own, I honestly don't see what this bit of news has to do with Linux / FOSS.
cc-by license allows you to transcode it to any format you want. cc-by license for the videos is the link to FOSS. If the list policy is to discuss only about software I rest my case.
Is it not only relevant but also remarkable that media (journalistic media, nonetheless !!) is being released using the CC license ?
I find it remarkable, yes, but there are lots of things in the world that are remarkable - I don't see how its relevant (to this list). I honestly don't agree that the CC license has anything to do really with FOSS or Linux. I think cc-licensing of media is very different from GPL / FOSS licensing of software. You can draw analogies, but analogies can be drawn to lots of things, and I'm not sure they all belong in this mailing list.
If that is the opinion of the entire list (at least one more person seems to agree with my interpretation) I rest my case.
Well, just because there might have been some (in your opinion) off-topic, perhaps mindless chatter, on the list, doesn't make it a dumping ground for any bit of 'interesting' news that doesn't really have anything to do with the list ..
I thought cc-by license selection is relevant for the list and on topic, especially with the comment from Lawrence Lessig.
Anyways - thanks for the link, Praveen - I do find the news fascinating and think it could fundamentally change television journalism, but I still don't see what that has to do with FOSS or Linux :)
:-(
Hope that ends the thread, though flames are welcome.
If the moderators think it is off topic, as per earlier suggestion I am proposing to start a new list (I will start one) where foss everywhere in life will be on topic.
