I agree with terrence here. Those who are trying out linux for the first time should experience as less problems as possible. Other if there are problems with packages, This mighr mar their first tryst with Linux. We want to attract people to Linux and FS/OSS not make them bother with the internal workings right away. Just my 2 paise.
