Hello Everyone, With regards to my problems this is something which i found after "Investigation". This is along email so please beer with it !! LOL
When my windows boots up, my system tray shows a network connected icon (two monitors) indicating that it is on the network. Now after this happens i connect to the internet using PPPoE protocol. My cablenet provider has installed a dialer (Windows dialer no special software) which uses this protocol and connects to the internet.
On the hand in linux when the system boots up it shows a message saying "Bringing up interface eth0 [ok]" Which indicates that the machine was successfully placed on the network. I guess if not then it just hangs or tries to connect indefinately. To buttress this fact further i would say that when i ssue an ifconfig the output shows Received by as a different value everytime (Increasing everytime) which i suppose indicates that the pc is indeed on the network. One question remains that even if i keep my default gateway address as blank then also my ifconfig shows two different address for eth0 which are 172.25.65.29 and Bcast as 172.25.65.31. i am not sure what this means!! any help would be appreciated. Refer to my if config output below. ''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''' Link encap:Ethernet HWaddr 00:0B:6A:67:E2:3A inet addr:172.25.65.29 Bcast:172.25.65.31 Mask:255.255.255.252 UP BROADCAST RUNNING MULTICAST MTU:1500 Metric:1 RX packets:14598 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 frame:0 TX packets:4 errors:0 dropped:0 overruns:0 carrier:0 collisions:0 txqueuelen:100 RX bytes:898426 (877.3 Kb) TX bytes:240 (240.0 b) Interrupt:5 Base address:0xdf00 '''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''
The next step i have taken is that i have downloaded the PPPoE protocol for linux and installing that but now other problem arises which is module dependencies. PPPoE expects cc compiler installed but it seems my machine does not have one. So i downloaded an RPM package for the same but that in turn asks for glibc-develp package. I downloaded that and tried installing but it in turn asked for kernel headers Since i dont have the installation cd for linux i have downloaded that also and will give a try but if that fails then i will get the CD and perform the installation.
Some questions regarding PPPoE would be what parameters should i provide to this protocol. I checked my windows configuration which says that they are given by DNS i wll try with that else ILUG-BOM zindabad!!!!
Bye for now and thanx again for the help given and probably would require in future since i still have some question regarding the usability of linux.
