If you install kde over gnome does it overwrite gdm? i mean does gnome work under kdm? I went through a few links under google but none could give me an answer!
Unless your distribution changes the display manager, no. In Debian, for example, when you install kdm, you are asked to choose between kdm, gdm and xdm (assuming all of them are installed). Same holds while installing gdm.
And I have used GNOME wih KDM and KDE with GDM. However, I couldn't directly shut down my computer from KDE if I had logged in through GDM, IIRC (not sure though). No other problems.
Or do the display managers work exclusively as in Gnome by default uses gdm whenever you log into gnome and kde uses kdm whenever i log into KDE?
The running of the display manager presupposes logging into GNOME or KDE, right? And the work of the display manager is over once you are logged in, till you log out again.
