Does Blender support OBJ format? Why don't you try that if it does. 3DS is a proprietary format of 3D Studio Max while the OBJ format is used to port files from literally any 3D modeling and editing software to another. Also, before exporting your model into any file format, make sure you have oriented the local axes of the model to the world. If its only the orientation that has changed and not its topography, then you don't need a work around, only need to rotate the model in blender :-)
