there are those who do foss for fun and those who do foss for profit. And those who do it for both. Those who do it for fun - typically releasing their code under the GPL, also profit indirectly from it in terms of recognition, jobs etc. Those who do it for profit - usually releasing their code under some BSD style license profit both directly and indirectly. But, be aware, if you have a business mindset that follows the proprietary software business model, you will not profit.
