hi i have configured X hubndreds of times but i haven't been able to find out why my X display shifts to the right i know this has something to do with the horizontal frequency settings of my monitor but what exactly? is there any way to save the adjustments made by xvidtune . i tried manually editing my XF86Config-4 but it didnot work i remember XF86Setup had an option to do so but redhat has deprecated it it still works in freebsd though can anybody help me out on this

Did you mean xf86config when you said XF86Setup? I haven't heard of the latter but there's an option in xf86config to specify the horizontal and vertical frequency ranges of your monitor manually, even in RedHat 8.0.

no i meant XF86Setup that is /bin/X11/XFree86Setup it was a utility somewhat like Xconfigurator that redhat no longer provides

Even after setting the standard refresh rates of your monitor (both v & h) from the manual, you may still encounter this problem. Unlike the support software provided by the manufacturer under Windoz you do not have low level easy to use tweak utilities in Linux.
IMHO a workable workaround is to use the monitor settings controls (those that ar *on* the monitor) to shift the desktop to the left.
