Mark Shuttleworth met with the Bangalore linux users group today. It was a great meet with over 150 people. He spoke about Ubuntu, and how they work with developers, about source control at a distribution level rather than at a project level, and also on his trip to space.
Don't miss the meet at IIT.

I guess all those who objected to someone(me) lookin for a little bit of "developer oriented stuff" can see for themselves that indeed he also understands that "Linux is good" talks are not right for LUG or rather GLUGs... so well we have common ground, u wanted to come anyway I cared a little bit about content, its all there...

Why G/LUG is restricted to "developer oriented stuff" only? There can be more fun than that! -- ,_ , Kartik Mistry <kart_> (O,O) GNU/Linux Developer ( ) http://kartikm.blogspot.com -"-----"-------------------------------> <-------------GPG Key : 0xD1028C8D

You bet it can be... that was just one the things i put down, it could even be tips and tricks(altyhough frm shuttleworth i probably expect some more).. but "Linux is good" talks are not fun anymore, and ya as far as whats in it for for me bit is concerned that ppl talked abt well attending talks is not social service, that I do it in a self less manner, whats wrong with lookin for somethin that intrests u in talks that u go to...

Ah well. What u need is seminars - the one where u pay Rs.5000/ to hear IBM/Oracle/crappyvendor plug their stuff.
whats wrong with lookin for somethin that intrests u in talks that u go to...
Nothing at all - until u get "it".

Oh well, for the suggestion, thanks.. I really appreciate ur enlightenment about what i really need, but i think i can fugure that bit out for myself... And ya I guess u like going to talk for social service.. well good for u... I guess ur also one of those that think freebies are there to grab no matter if ur bald and the freebie is a scissor... so here is my suggestion.. grab away to glory...
I really appreciate ur knowledge about linux,, but i think sometimes.. u go off direction with ur Opinions.. And then with ur ego its ur way or the highway.. chill bossey...

Oh thanks for small mercies.

Nope. The "social service" i indulge in is an attempt to repay the community that so freely gives away it's best. But considering that u are grabbing the freebie known as GNU/Linux AND would like to known what it's in it for u i guess your description would apply very well to u.
I really appreciate ur knowledge about linux,,
Thanks to the GNU community.

Rubbish. And that is a personal attack.

I really hope so.

I dont know how attending talks counts as repaying. And well I would really like to contribute to the community in terms of code and effort and i am doing all that i am capable of.. I have been tryin to convince my friends to switch linux, and have been tryin to solve their problems, so that they stick to it. But in terms of code m not that good enough to do that so that will take time...
And ya about that freebie grabber bit, i dont think u quite understood it right... I am not grabbing it witht knowing whats in it for me... I am grabbing because there is a lot in it for me, some of those things are 1. The amount of knowledge i gather in the process of learning it.. e.g. i learnt about XUL while figuring out stuff about firefox, i learnt about various parameters that affect a web server while using apache etc. etc. 2. Secondly, (and this i attribute to the one of the thigs that u said) i can use OS and software and give it to my friends for free with a clear conscience that m not breaking any laws in my country(which by the way is imp for me). 3. Its fun...
and i am not ashamed of this fact. So well think what u like post what u like, but I am out of this discussion.. i guess ur answer will be sarcastic thank u here but idc....
I really hope so.
I did, it was great... Hope u were there too..

i have noticed quite a few people babbling about social service in this thread. Two things that give the community a bad name are that we are pirates by nature and that we are doing social service. Building community has nothing to do with social service (which, btw, is one of the most lucrative professions going - all you need is no qualifications and a big mouth to make big money)
A simple illustration - if your hobby is rat catching, it is no fun unless you can meet fellow rat catchers to brag about the ones you caught and lament about the big one that got away. You meet, you exchange tips and tricks, you build clubs, you expand to other cities and finally have a worldwide community of rat catchers. Where is the social service involved?
Foss is not religion, it is not social service, it is fun, it is sound business sense - and the pseudo religious/charitable colour some people give it is the biggest enemy of foss.

HaHa. AIDS, save stray dogs, save the cow, prevent cruelty to sundry critters that bite your ass, rehabilitate slum dwellers, Mumbai culture & curry, Mumbai marathon. Plenty of moolah from billy baba and friends - whatamidoingonthislist. Hail BILL (pronounced as God) provider of the sick and downtrodden.

I am still laughing at the example.

exactly my point.. i am in it because thats a personal choice based on reason ranging from learning to fun(can be both and in between).. but its not something that im forcing myself into so if i come for an event or not is also a personal decision...
m sorry if i came out wrong, but all i meant was that using Gnu/linux is not social service and i do it because i see somthin in it for me...

the point is that since it is built by a community, it will only grow if the community grows - else it will wither away. So if we want to continue to use it and benefit by it - we *have* to contribute to the growth of the community in any way we can
