Hey people,
My friend wants to buy a Linux friendly motherboard. The dealer is giving him the following options:
1. MSI RS480M2 for AMD64 2800+ 2. Intel 845GVSR for P4 2.4Gig 3. Intel 915GAV(i think, not sure) for a P4 2.66Gig
His requirements: 1. Basic development PC, nothing much 2. Must be able to run Madrake(Mandriva) 10.1 Official 3. Alternatively he should be able to run SuSE 9.1 PE which is quite old and hence I question the availability of drivers for recent hardware. 4. He is a newbie so everything must work out of the box. Don't expect him to compile drivers and stuff...forget a kernel recompile.
Please give your opinions and suggest a better, more compatible motherboards. I personally own an Intel 865GBF motherboard which works correctly with all distros. No tweaking required.
Thanks.

I just got news from my supplier collegues today that P4 2.4 is no longer available and the starting point for Pentium now is P4 2.66 which is a pin-less processor and will be supported by 915 board only. Pin processors are now history.
This brings up the overall cost of the system up due to the 400 MHz RAM, SATA HDD, 400w SMPS although the dealers say 300w is ok.
Everyone, please checkup with your suppliers again.
Regards,
Rony.

FWIW, Intel is preparing to kill off the 9xx line as well. Again, SATA isn't really a good replacement for SCSI, and if you want to go cheap, IDE works fine.
I would suggest a Sempron/Athlon64 instead on ASUS/MSI.

Yep, I was aware of the problem faced by many distros with getting sound working on the 915 motherboard. Could you give me some model numbers of ASUS/MSI boards which are known to work well with Linux?

Rony, the dealer my friend talked to must have those pieces in stock thats why he offered it. I own a P4 2.8C GHz HT 800MHz FSB (Northwood) and it works with the D865GBF Motherboard. So I guess the 2.66 that he must be talking must also work with the 845GVSR board. Though, I think the 845 board is probably a very bad performer and more suited for the celeron. Also, I recommended against buying a SATA drive since Linux doesnt support spinning down these drives like the PATA counter parts. I'll warn my friend against buying the 2.4Gig processor since intel has stopped those line of processors...

First, a very good morning to you and all those who are still awake and reading mails. :)
The P4 2.66 is a _pin-less_ pprocessor and will mount only on the 915 mobo.

Rony.

Go for the MSI-AMD combo. Am using it for the last 2+ years with my AMD Athlon and never once had an issue. Writing this email on my rock-solid-rhel box.

But do you have experience on the same exact MSI motherboard? or some other one?
