This is speculation / knee-jerk reaction.. the OP needs to clearly communicate the symptoms and other observations before we conclude on whether its a rootkit OR bad media.

True. However LFY dvd's are of extremely poor quality. If the install runs behind a gui screen and or the user is a newbie, he is likely to miss errors and wind up with a not so proper install. eg using a file system without the fsck tools.

Surprisingly, no. I lost my entire installation once trying to update to Mandriva 2007 from Mandriva 2006, from a faulty LFY DVD. So that proves two points? Hmm?
