I dont want to hijack this thread but I purchased a Samsung ML-1520P and I am IMPRESSED with the amount of Linux support they have incorporated! They have actually put in a GUI installer like they have in Windoze and it works smoothly... Only problem is that it breaks system-config-print-gui. Dunno why but I am not using their driver but rather 1510 driver...
Bottom line: HP sucks at Linux support. Samsung's not the best but they have made an excellent attempt at bringing ease to the world of Linux :D

cheaper HP machines are not meant to be linux compatible

What makes the more expensive machines Linux compatible? Just because they are used by corporates?! >.> If Samsung can why can't HP? They are the so called "leaders" in this field... or is there too much M$ pressure to make the machines Linux unfriendly? =P

nope, cheaper machines, like winmodems, have proprietory non-standard bits of software to replace hardware so that they can make them cheaper. this software is usually one-off stuff - not worth the effort to make linux drivers for them (if it is possible at all). This goes for lowest-end scanners and printers.

True, but my question still remains unanswered. Why Samsung and not HP? HP is supposed to be a role model as it is an industry leader...

The problem in question was related to a shared printer. So is there any way a network printer on a windows machine can be issued print commands without a driver? What is the difference between a network printer and a print server?

Rony.

An industry leader might not be #1 just because they are better or innovate more. It might be that they are able to keep margins high (in other words they might be better at sucking money out of people/corporates) with ordinary products. Samsung needs every costumer they can get so they might go that extra mile of providing linux drivers/compatability. The same might not be true for HP which is sitting like a mother hens on the eggs waiting for them to hatch.
BTW just look around at the companies which are market leaders in their own segments. If they are role models then we (the computer industry) are doomed.
ps : <disclaimer> I don't work for either of these companies and am also not associated with either in any ways. This is just a cynical opinion seen from how companies operate. Feel free to draw your own conclusions. :-) </disclaimer>

which promise to provide solution but its is not happening with my case. So if possible kindly helpme out.
