I suggest is, we can have a big Workshop/Seminar of one full day. Our volunteers will visit different colleges and invite students and also professors for the workshop.
Volunteers will give a brief Linux introduction at the colleges and invite them for advanced topics ( Custom Distro, Programming, Linux Localization, Server Setups etc..) at the Seminar.
Having seminars at different colleges is very time consuming, we can at the most have only 2-3 seminars a month, by the time we reach 6-7 colleges, their regular exams will be getting started and also with the number of volunteers we have, reaching 6 colleges in 2 months is a big task.
The Seminar/Workshop can be held at any college auditorium, or may be at HBCSE.
When I had taken a lecture on Linux at Patkar college, Goregaon, students there were more keen to know the alternatives to MS Applications and how could they implement it.
Giving them a customised distro wouldn't be helpfull if they don't even know the applications available in Linux. I support the development of customised Distro, instead we can involve interested students from colleges in this process who in turn will be promoting it in their respective circles.
Having a common seminar for everyone will help us present in a better way. There won't be a time barrier as when doing at colleges. This way we can target large and interested audience.
We can invite private institutions also and can have sponsors for the seminar. Some volunteers can go to commercial organisations for sponsorship.

[snip] this is abso fine......the lug can always continue to do that.... Also dude, past xperience has told us that it's easy to commit. But pple r too busy to find time out to travel all over the city to some god forsaken place for lectures.....Though i know a handful who would do it ......come wat may
Luggers......don't get me wrong.......Pliss the LUG can go ahead and conduct workshops @ regular intervals......i will be more than happy abt it. But at the same time.......
--> I would luv it if the LUG could put down an agenda that pple like me could make use of when we make visits to Educational Institutions all over India. <--
I am not tryin to disturb a hornets nest out here.....All that i am sayin is there will always be lots of co-ordination issues when the LUG will come up with Seminars to be conducted at regular intervals due to vry1's commiments. Thus we should also consider it our orch to bear and make our own comitment to go out there and do somethin abt it.... Lets debate to gettin an Agenda down that pple like me can make use of and thus be very neutral abt the issues i talk abt and make sure i am doin a good job or the small time given to me at the various Educatinol institutions.........

[snip] it indeed is a good idea....but try invitin 1-15 colleges to ur place....u will hav to get vrythin aranged.....dude believe me. I hav done this many times....and no1 is will in to travel just to listen to someguy rant abt Software.....:D Keep it in his/her premises....nd u'll get vry1....much lesser headache this way...:D
their regular exams will be getting started and also with the number of volunteers we have, reaching 6 colleges in 2 months is a big task.
[snip] imagine.......we hav many orators on out lugs....imagine if ...even if 5-6 start this initiative, it's more than enough to stir a hornets nest. Rome wasn't built in a day boy....Slow and steady win's the race. No hard feelins dude....just gigin u a bite of my travellin xperiences....:D
Giving them a customised distro wouldn't be helpfull if they don't even know the applications available in Linux. I support
[snip] thats my opinion too..... just my opinion, don't want to step on ny1's feet. Instead my opinion is... "Stand on the shoulders of Giants....it's easier to conquer the world this way......" Follow the KISS philosophy....Keep It SImple and Stupid...(kiss).
Having a common seminar for everyone will help us present in a better way. There won't be a time barrier as when doing at colleges. This way we can target large and interested audience.
[snip] yep...u got a point... but remember, it's a larger audience u hav when u take the trouble of travellin to the venue @ their locatin than hav them comeout here. Also.....wat abt the places i travel to all over maharashtra....how would u account for them.... Statistically speakin...1 would do a smaler crowd, but BELIEVE me, i am more than happy to entertain these remote Engineerin colleges with GPL/Linux for them simple reason that i find them MORE KEEN than even the kids in the cities to learn abt GPL/Linux.
We can invite private institutions also and can have sponsors for the seminar. Some volunteers can go to commercial organisations for sponsorship.
[snip] Wait not for the work to bear fruit, ur hardwork will be rewarded. The bible says.....let not ur right hand know wat ur left hand does while makin a sacrifice. Therefore....if some1 wants to support he/she will. We should make it clear....all that u need for the SEMINAR is a plain re-imbursement of travel+accomodation.

Actually, from what I've seen, college faculty are interested in something like this, and if we hold it at a central location, they will come to listen from all over. I've seen people not only come, but pay as well. If it is free, there will be a larger crowd.
Sponsors may well be a requirement, because one thing people want to go away with is printed notes, a manual, something that they can refer to later. We will need money to do that, and either charging participants or getting sponsors is the only way to do it. In any case, till now we have never claimed even travel allowance for seminars in Mumbai.
