the mail comes into my inbox - that is personal enough. Almost all of us on this list joined to discus linux issues. If we wanted to discus other things there are other lists for that. In short, don't use this list to get non-linux related mails into my mailbox.

Using the same logic,
"Linux runs on "my" PC too. So let's discuss me."
As you might now see, this logic is horribly flawed. This list is not meant to discuss *anything* related to Linux. This list is dedicated to the discussion of the Operating System called GNU/Linux and the problems that people face while using it. If the question about the printer was driver related, then this list would have been the appropriate place. However, the question is just about a printer in general and nothing about the question is specific to Linux. Hence, this question is out of place on this list.

I completely agree with this, however I would like to see a lot less careless language on the list in initial replies to such mails. Stern yet constructive replies should be given to make such points clear to the offending person. General and careless replies should be kept to a minimum. I have already seen two in last 6 hrs. By being precise and firm in our replies to such mail, I think we will be clarifying the spirit of free and *civilized* online discussions to others who come later.
For newbies,
*** PLEASE READ THE LIST ETIQUETTES BEFORE YOU START POSTING ***
If you can not find your answers by doing following three things, then post on the *relevant* list.
1. man -k <thing you wish to search for, e.g. apache> 2. info <command> 3. Go to www.google.com and search.
Tip: when reading man pages / other text documents, pressing '/' and typing a keyword after that locates relevant stanzas quickly.
And when you post, you should indicate that a relevant background research was done before posting here. This is what will increase your knowledge of the system, not careless postings.
Best regards,
Rajesh

It doesn't matter if the printer is connected to my Christmas Tree. Changing the cartridge is irrelevant.
Also, please trim a post when replying. If so many of us can do it, why can't you?

Guys, Have you people read my earlier post giving solution for that guy's problem.
HE WANTED A LINUX BASED UTILITY TO CHANGE EPSON PRINTER CARTRIDGE.
This was a genuine problem and a little search on Google revealed that such a utility exists for LINUX which can be used to change Cartridges and perform printer maintenance tasks.
Peace.. lilo

To avoid being flamed newbies **please** read the following:
1> How to ask questions the smart way? http://www.linuxsilo.net/docs/smart-questions-en.html
2> Search the net and archives of this mailing list to find out if your questions have already been answered.
3> RTFM and the manpages/howtos/FAQs
This will save a lot of people some trouble. I want to encourage people to do some homework and ask (sensible) questions sensibly. That said i don't want my mailbox to be filled with all sorts of inane questions unrelated to linux. REMEMBER THE PERSON AT THE OTHER END IS ALSO HUMAN. I am not a bot ;). I don't understand y the same thing has to be repeated several times on the mailing list after periodic intervals.
Let there be peace.

Because as GNU/Linux grows in popularity, newbies and non-technical people increase on the list. Some things seem straightforward to some people because they happened to have had the right kind of exposure ... not everyone catches on equally fast. Patience is the key ... if one person has already cribbed about someone's email, the others should refrain.
Someone else had already mentioned this, what we need is gentle, strong criticisms, with lots of encouragement.
About the mail being off-topic, turns out it wasn't, so ...
Sameer.
