U dont need a device like a modem, the modem is inbuilt into the phone, its not so simple though to connect to the internet..
Reliance provides software for linux, so it works for a fact, besides the speed using GPRS is not very good at least for a PC to surf.

Reliance internet speed is unreliable besides it is costly if used for long periods of time. GPRS on the other hand, carries a fixed charge (Rs. 500 - 600 per month). However, it is slower (28-40kbps)

It is 40p per min during peak hours and 40p per 10 min during 10pm -6 am and public holidays.
It is as costly as dialup.

No, reliance internet is 20p per min at night. But we are getting a little off topic now.

Nope. Get the dedicated line from MTNL/BSNL (500 INR flat rate), and dialup is cheaper. If you want to roam, it might be easier to plug into a payphone someplace.

Hi
We use gprs from windows laptops and desktops. What you need is a good GPRS phone and connectivity. There are lots of issues in choosing the gprs phone (send me a mail offline or call me if you want details).
You also need to decide how the phone is going to connect to the laptop. The following methods are available :
1. Built-in IR port 2. USB IR Port (Rs. 1K) 3. Serial / USB wire (usually Rs 1-3K)
Before you buy the phone, make sure that you have the drivers available. You can get the details from the website of the phone manufacturer.
Once you configure the phone connectivity to the laptop, getting GPRS working is very easy. You need to only dial the specified number and profile from the kppp dialer. (eg. in Orange, use *99***1#).
In fact, I am planning to try the same thing on my laptop (in Linux). Should do it over the weekend.
