Hi,
Does anybody notice that? Since last few hours, I am unable to ssh, svn+ssh to any servers I would like to. I am getting timeouts from each of the servers. I called the sify helpline, which now even has a "Press 2 for technical support". The dude asked me to click on the trayicon of sifybb thingie. When I told him that I am using Linux, he kept me on hold and had a conference, I think. Another dude spoke to me after that and asked me - if ssh was a program or something? After some more discussion I was promised that everything will be ok in next 1 hour. So I am waiting.
I am wondering if somebody with sifybb in Mumbai/New Mumbai can check if port 22 is blocked or is it my figment of imagination? Thanks.
Cheers!

Ok, sify guys sent a dude to my place, no not the cable dude, a sify dude. This is the first time since I have been using sify ( for GOD knows how many years.)
So I showed him that I couldn't login to any ssh server and such things when connected via sify but I could do it when connected using Tata Indicom Datacard. The dude told me chang my IP and then he used another login just to check. Apparently it didnot work. He asked me the "remote" IP which sort of made no sense to me. Then someone from Vile Parle called me and spoke to me and the dude even. They discussed something - the dude told the guy on phone what ssh was - "linux ka ek command" and such things. They tried Telnet-ing to some server but it failed on their XP box or so they told me.
And there were more calls to and fro between the dude and his colleagues/seniors. And then finally he said it seems its a problem at our end. They will try to solve it from the backend. I said ok. Soon I got another call from Vile Parle dude and he again asked me for remote IP. "Humare pass port no. to hai lekin remote IP nahi hai." I said fine and gave him some remote IP which I knew had a ssh server running. I wonder what they are going to do with that remote IP.
Right now, I am waiting for them to fix the problem ....
Cheers!

I'm on Sify, Navi Mumbai right now. I tried SSHing to my webserver but failed. It used to work earlier. I'm not sure if my admin has disabled ssh access on my server. So, can't tell if its a Sify issue.
Do you know of any server that accepts ssh connections? I can test from my end and let you know.
Regards, NMK.

Do you have a freeshell.in account? Can you please try telneting to port 22 on freeshell.in or any server that runs a ssh server and tell me what happens? I can connect/ssh to freeshell.in using my Tata Indicom connection. Thanks.
Cheers!

Dude, if you are in or near Mumbai/Navi Mumbai and have not called me yet, I am taking serious offence ;). :P Thanks though :). I think only BOM users are facing this problem.

He he. May be BOM-Sify users. Let me try to find some MAA-Sify user and ask him to check. :)

Whats MAA Sify? I know its a domain, and BOM means Bombay, but what does MAA mean? Maharashtra?

Nopes, MAA is the airport code for Chennai like BOM for Mumbai. Sify is based of Chennai, IIRC.

I don't have an account, but I should atleast get the login prompt when I ssh. Cant ssh or telnet to port 22. I can telnet to its port 25, fwiw.
Do you know sify's last mile ip? We can port scan it. I scanned my default gateway router and it says ssh is filtered.

Can you please lodge a complaint? More complaints might just wake them up. I am sure its their fault. Thanks a lots in advance.

Thanks. I just checked and its still not working. Last time I called the helpline those great chaps didnot even pick it up. Not even the direct number. And IIRC, I was once told it was 24x7. Sad, really sad. I think we should think atleast billion times before we say the word "IT Superpower" next time. *Sigh*
Cheers!

Want to have more fun? Try DNS tools from dnsstuff.com on my domain davelok.com. I have been banging my head against VSNL's completely dumb, clueless and useless service support since January, when I got it registered and bought hosting space. I wanted to set up a tiny website, but heck, teh interweb doesn't even know it exists.
They have promised to call back a dozen times. Only promised.
Hi folks,
Pfew! So they ( the call center ) didnot pick up the phone since late evening and today morning. I spoke to the operator dude and the techie guy who came visiting me yesterday who reassured me that it will be solved since a issue has been raised. And it still didnot work until ... just now.
I think Sify fixed the problem. I can now ssh to most placed I generally ssh to. I could even svn+ssh from KDE and as I type this latest checkout of KDE 4 is getting built :)
Thanks guys - especially to people who probably lodged a complaint. And whoever solved the issue.
Cheers!

A `traceroute` to a public address should give you the required info.

Already did that, but it gets timed out after five hops, without reaching the destination.

I'm able to traceroute to the end, but no access.
I logged into my sourceforge shell account successfully and was about to proudly say 'Well, works for me'. Then I realized I was using my MTNL connection and not sify :P
