Dear All,
I am new to linux and am using a Linpus Linux Lite which uses a desktop version.
I was wanting to install AVG antivirus. Is it necessary?
When I tried to install it it asked for the administrator password, which I dont have.
I tried to use Terminal to install it but it wanted me to login as root. I couldnt as I did not have the password.
I am using an acer aspire one notebk.
Anybody can help.
I am happy to use linux and dont want to switch back to windows.
Thanks

Dear Ashok,
Just so you know, it is NOT needed. Linux desktops are immune to all of the viruses out in the wild, and that is why very few of the Antivirus vendors even make a desktop version of their antivirus. Even then, it is only to scan files being sent to them by windows users which may then affect other users that they get forwarded to, not to protect your system.
So dont worry about AVG or any other antivirus, you'll be fine and run faster without them. Now, on the other hand, do make sure you update your system with security updates regularly, and you will actually be more secure than any windows system out there.
the root password of the aspire one default installation must be in the documentation somewhere. I have not used linpus, but AFAIK, it is fedora based, so maybe the process used to reset a Fedora Root password may also work for linpus. Also, once you get some time, maybe you could show me some screenshots of linpus. i'm curious...(off list, of course)

You don't need any antivirus. However to gain full control of your system, to get the root password, here is what google found.

to change the root password, use Alt-F2 to run Terminal, then change to root user with 'sudo su' and then change the password with passwd"

Whenever you face difficult situations, google is your friend and helps you out most of the time.
