Hi Kedar,
I've heard that Linux doesn't support internal modem ....
Is that true ?
Yes, but Not very much....
If yes why ?
It is b'coz internal modems works with the softwares codes ( drivers ), which we install during the installation of the internal modems. You can use these modems with linux if somehow you can manage to get the driver of your relative modem. I, myself, use internal modem ( D-Link sm56 modem ) on linux, & it works very fine. For more details on internal modems check out, linux doc for winmodem ( Ya, internal modems are called as winmodems. )
Happy Linuxing, SAMEER :)

Sorry for the late reply dude, But -

It is not ENTIRELY true. TO explain in layman terms Many internal modems actually do not have all the hardware that is present in external modems. Most of the hardware is simulated by drivers supplied by vendors, and these vendors do not provide drivers for linux. Such modems are winmodems. Most (and some external) internal modems fall in this class and hence wont work with linux.
If yes why ?
U may ask, windows has those drivers, (inbuilt and it autodetects the modem, so not from vendor) then why does Linux not have them - Most of the vendors do not provide all modem specs needed to build a driver. How windows gets them, we dont know. And yes, Linux has support for many, if not all internal modems (win modems) I myself use an internal winmodem and have it running smooth under linux. But U will have to do some digging. Get the fcc number of your part, or look up ur manual, see what chipset the modem has and look for drivers written for that chipset. Mine uses pctel, and I have found drivers for it... Search and u will find. Go google :) Bye, Surya __ __ |__ |__| |/ __|urya |rakash |\ompalli

Sometime on Mar 9, Suryaprakash Kompalli assembled some asciibets to say:

Windows does not have in built support for these hardware. It is obtained from the hardware manufacturers. Either you get the driver diskette with your hardware, or microsoft purchases the software to package along with windows.
If linux distributors were to do the same, then linux could no longer be free (of cost).
