Hello All,
I had a talk with Dr. Nagarjuna about the wireless gnu/linux download idea and it was decided that it should not be restricted to downloads of CD isos alone but it should be a wireless resource hub that will allow anyone to freely access the knowledge base with no internet restrictions. It should be installed in schools, colleges and other public places in the villages and towns all over India. It will act as a free knowledge and information hub. People can simply access whatever information they are looking for and for those who don't have laptops, they can simply walk into a knowledge cafe and save their required data on a recording media.
As a technology demonstrator, at the HBCSE, the plan is to setup a local wireless mesh of multiple APs that will provide a wide access range and then install the server that will provide the data to be freely downloaded. The process will be documented so that it can be emulated in other schools and colleges.
The day for setup will be a Saturday and timing will be after 5.30 pm, next week. So we need 2 to 3 people to help in setting it up. Once it is setup, we can have a session where everyone bring their laptops to do the downloads. Those who don't want to bring a laptop can bring blank cds that can be recorded during the session.
Those who are interested in contributing their time for this workshop may contact me off-list.

Just as an addon, why stop with just iso downloads, why not have a series of wired ports, where anyone can carry in a laptop/desktop, boot via dhcp+pxe and choose to install their favorite OS of choice (Sadly, we need wired ports for this, as most systems lack the ability to boot via wifi -- blame "Dumb-But-Cheap-Does-It-All-In-Firmware-or-Driver"<TM> Hardware :) . I'm sure we can give the a menu with a variety of free OS's to choose from. If u an get the hardware ready, I volunteer to drop by and set up the server to handle network installations of Fedora, Debian and whatever else we choose to put on it. And Probably some of the BSD guru's out there can do the same for *BSD :P
Also, Any news of when and if we are going to have a glug meet this month. i've been out of town for a while, and tied up with stuff, so i'm not sure.

Oh yes, please do drop by. It would be lovely to get all the minds working together. I will get my linux box for use as a server, with keyboard and mouse. A monitor should be available at the venue itself. The box is already loaded with Debian 3.1 Sarge RC5 base install and Apache for the web server. JTD will get the wireless mesh up and running. For the wired download, all we need is an 8 port switch and if anyone has one to spare for that evening, he can bring it to the venue. Those who want to get their wired machines up, could bring a LAN cable or two. :)

JTD will be the tech expert helping in the wireless mesh and other setups and he is not free on 24th and now I have an installation too on that day. 31st was chosen as it is a holiday too.

31st is a Saturday right? Why not move it to 32nd then?
And I'd like to attend while the mesh is being set up. I have no knowledge of wireless networking.

why not shift the date a week further? I had this suggestion because the official date of debian etch final release is 2nd app. so we can even include that one. any ways it is not necessary that we wait for this event but if we do, nothing like it! regards. Krishnakant.

If you are planning on distributing the latest Etch builds then take into account the DVD downloading and burning time as well. Which by the way is ``quite" substantial.

That is fine with me, if suits the others. The more the merrier.

Ya. Good idea. But dont bet a chai on debian releases. Also for the workshop a saturday is preferable cause we can do sill over work on Sunday if neccessary. In the first workshop 2 days was barely sufficient. Ofcourse then we were starting from scratch. Now we have the infrastructure in place (i hope it's still in place.). Fred Pook who had conducted the first workshop gave me a bricked AP. We can recover it by using the jtag (which i havent done as yet due to lack of time). So some more fun for the hardware challenged.
Hello All,
The Wireless Workshop will be held on 31st March at HBCSE Mankhurd from 5.30 pm onwards as per schedule. Those who cannot attend on that day can come the following week to try out the installed system. There will also be a document made to describe the installation process.

Question. Can we disassemble and reinstall everything?
Also, when does the actual installation take place? Before 5:30 pm or does it start at 5:30 pm? I want to attend when the installation takes place.

there is some communication gap here. I said the venue is available after 5:30 on working days, mon-friday, but on sat and sunday the lab can be used for hacking free software the whole day.
I have already reached the lab, thinking somebody is here. Prasanta told me that the the meeting is scheduled for 5:30pm.
OK. since we do have some research to do, those of you who wanted to come, and would like to come early, drop in as soon as possible.

Pobably no. Because of time constraints. We would have to do a full day event. But It would be very good to do one if we have sufficient numbers. The original workshop's goal was to run thru the steps of installing an adhoc mesh which could be used for rural communities in a self sustaining way. Subsequently the west bengal govt and afaik TN and Kerala govts are doing similiar things.

Ok. What we are going to do is connect a debian / other distro repository to the mesh. Any one in or around HBCSE will be able to download / install from this server. We presume that the mesh is still up and running. If it isnt then we will try to get it up and this would mean coming the next day too. Also since i have an AP (bricked) for use by the community others can try to debrick it using jtag.
For the exercise to succeed we would require ip addresses of the mesh router and gateway and their physical location. Those interested in debricking read up on friedfunk and jtag on parallel port and wriggler.
Rony could you please edit suitably and also obtain the ip info.

Well, Rony mentioned availability for the next weekend for those who can't attend, so that's when I was thinking of redoing it from scratch.

Hehehe, I'm kinda hoping that it'll need to be redone. I wasn't able to attend when it was set up. I'd love the opportunity to learn.

Ok, what other stuff should I read up on? I want to know my theory before I look at the practical.

You will have to ask Dr. Nag. He will point you to the right guys.
