Sometime ago there was a thread on advantages of Mono (was it Amol Hatwar). Not everyone on the list was convinced about it's advantages. I personally felt that a broader eco system would not be bad, especially since M$ was shouting from the roof top that .Net was free and open. On checking I found out that most of .Net is patent encumbered. Seems that unless i am willing to pay per seat + time limited protection money i am really digging my self into a hole. However the Mono project might still be of use if only to highlight the dangers of flirting with the vampire. My bet is that we would be seeing a Novell - M$ spat and Novell will have to abandon gpld mono but will continue using a closed version. Thus putting he poor souls who use Mono in a hole. see. If M$ says it's open be assured it's as open as a bear trap. Use .Net and Mono with very great caution.
