Web based feed aggregators -- Gregarius vs Planet Wed, 2006-12-13 19:29 — Derek Cordeiro
It has been a while that Gregarius has been set up on feeds.goa-india.org and has been working pretty fine with minor downtime due to mysql and memory issues. Today I have set up Planet at planet.goa-india.org. How do these two feed readers compare?
Gregarius is a PHP/MySQL based script. Its got buzzwords written all over... Ajax!
Pros:
* Web based admin with adding a feed with just about one click * support for themes * support for plugins * opml import/export makes switching to Gregarius a piece of cake * support for tags and categories * additional functionality like sticky articles, flagged articles, etc
Cons:
* Requires MySQL database * requires cron
Planet is a python based feed reader powering a lot of "planets"
Pros:
* setting up is very straightforward for a geek.(just a few commands will get it done) * support for Author Photos * requires only python 2.2 * generates static html output(easier on the server)
Cons:
* No Web based admin, feeds have to be added to a config file. * requires cron. * no theme switching available, templates are available though. * since feeds have to be added manually, there is no direct opml import. * no readily available plugins or themes(to my knowledge)
