Hi,
One of my friends wants to go in for a new system. He is keen on dualbooting with Linux and Windows. He is going in for an AMD64 3000+ system. He asked me to recommend a good compatible motherboard with moderate to high performance.
I am a complete newbie to AMD systems. I have a sempron system but I am clueless about which motherboards are available for AMD64 let alone the good ones compatible with Linux...
Anyone with an AMD64 system please respond.
PS.: I heard that AMD64 is based on different cores. Which core should he get? Also what should be the operating frequency of the DDR RAM he buys? 333MHz or 400MHz or should he go in for a DDR2? I know that the CPUs FSB and the RAM's OF should be in sync for optimum performance. What is it for an AMD64 system?

I found this link usefull for mobo information for my client. However do dig out more for linux support.

I have been using AMD64 3000+ on a MSI K8TNeo for the past 1.5 years - a very happy camper with the combo. My experience with other MSI mobos has also been very good.
As for memory compatibility; check the mobo's manual once you have selected the model/brand.

Thanks a bunch. My post wasn't clear about the memory "compatibility" part. So here it is again... I own a p4 with 800MHz FSB. The ideal RAM for this is DDR400 while if we put in a DDR333 then it will slow down the machine because of mismatch between the processor's FSB and the memory's operating frequency.
Similarly, I would like to know what is the relation between AMD's processors and the RAM's frequency. I have a sempron 2200+ which has an FSB of 333MHz and the optimum RAM for it would be DDR333.

Generally in any mobo, its quite safe to select the RAM with the higher FSB. If the mobo does not support it, the RAM will automatically work on a lower FSB. So if your mobo is meant for 333 MHz, you can still put a 400 MHz RAM but if the mobo is 400 MHz, your 333 MHz RAM will not be suitable. Do take care of what technology is supports like DDR or DDR2. That is not interchangable, to the best of my knowledge.
