I installed Ubuntu on a senior writer's machine to get him rid of Windows. He is comfortable and happy, but when he uses SCIM to type in Hindi and takes print-out, all he gets on paper is boxes.
Can anyone please help.

Which editor is being used? What does print preview show? I am assuming while typing, Hindi is showing correctly.

Try exporting a PDF, if it shows properly, then print and see if still boxes are there. Alternately try using different font for Hindi text ( you could try , Gargi, Aksharyogini, Lohit Hindi, Sarai etc). Atleast would help pinpoint, the problem ( also check if Tools -> Options -> Language has CTL enabled ).

OpenOffice.org. Print preview shows everything OK. Yes there are no errors shown while typing. Also one more query, how do you type the 'matra' of 'ra' as in 'prakash' 'Kriya' in SCIM setup?
Regards and thanks in advance Swapnil

if using inscript , type halant from key 'd' , for phonetic 'f' phonetic sequence -> pfrkaS or inscript -> hdjkeM

In OO's File menu, there is a printer setup. In that, go to your printer properties, inside to Device options and try different options for PostScript Level instead of the option 'from driver'.
