PDF versions of UserGuide and AdminGuide come with the distro; look for a RPM called SuSEdocs (or something to that effect). For hard copy you can print them :)
As for Linux compliant/certified (not complaint) laptops; put the latest KNOPPIX CD and boot off of it and see if it can detect sound, video, wlan, lan etc. properly.

Buy any laptop which comes with the following: 1. Intel Pentium / Celeron 2. Intel 855GME chipset 3. Intel 2100 / 2200 PRO b/g wifi card
and you will be assured 99% compatibility. The wifi cards have good driver support (the best IMHO). The chipset is also supported quite well. I am using a Dell with the above details. No problem with Fedora Core 2. I dunno about compatibility with AMD Turion based laptops...
