My system is working fine and I use original software so no reboot problems. I even test a lot of software. How did you create the boot floppy? Maybe my process was not correct. I took the memtest.iso and burned it into a CD using nero. Then I booted using the CD. What process did you use?
Created a seperate partition and installed the stuff. Booted using grub. Using a cd should not make a difference though. And as usual use whatever suits u best.

I am trying out your method.
What line should I add to the grub.conf file so that this extra partition can now be added to the boot list? I have XP, RHEL and Xandros installed in my system. My current boot loader is grub from Xandros.
