I am thinking of purchasing the HP LaserJet 1010 for home use. Does this printer work well with Linux? The evidence from Google is mixed: linuxprinting.org goes as far as to say this is a "Windows only" printer and is "not recommended" under Linux.
If it says windows only avoid it like the plague. Most likely the printer will have several "features" provided only by the closed driver, which will give u a problem a yr or so later. The reason: HP will disclose hardware details under a very onerous NDA, which no sane person will sign let alone a FOSS developer. Cases in point winmodems, several canon and hp printers, flash disks, graphic display cards etc. However there have been a few cases that are the opposite, where the gnu.linux version is vastly superior eg. epson printers using gimp drivers. However hardware details for such devices have been freely available.

Thanks for the reply. Can anyone recommend a laser printer in the same price range (below 10k) that is known to work well with Linux?
Thanks in advance,

Hi guys, Got a suggestion. Why don;t we maintain a list of hardware which works with linux on our lug site .This will be useful to people purchasing hardware known to work on linux like the one above(printers). Many of them have issues with printers, modem, webcam, laptop etc.So guys having these can put up on the lug site. This can be a useful reference for people purchasing hardware.we can also put mailid of corresponding persons so that the guy wanting to purchase can contact him and ask him of his experience with that h/w.
