where are you installing the mailserver? on the internet or on an intranet?

If you want to be able to receive mail as an SMTP server, you need an externally routable IP. (Google for what "externally routable" means.)
There are other ways of getting mail to a non-routable server, such as fetchmail. Note that for a multi-user system, these ways are kludgy hacks.

If you dont have your own, you can get something like dyndns configured. Ofcourse if you can take the trouble for that, might as well get your own global static IP (as the vsnl folks put it).
works well for me.

You need to have a permanent live IP for your organization if you plan to keep a mail server (also generally known as mailgate) with yourself. In this case your mail server will directly send and receive all the mails for your organization to external domains.
Alternatively you can render services from mail service providers like Yahoo or Rediff. They receive & send all the mails for your organization. In this case your server will SMTP/POP mails of your organization to/from the Yahoo/Rediff server. Here you dont require a permanent live IP address. Also a plus point would be you can avail many advanced features like spam protection and Antivirus check already available with them.
