Hi Apoorva,
Did you try increasing the sound volume using the mixer applet? Use the gnome/kde mixer that is available with your desktop installation or download and use the alsa mixer ('apt-get install alsautils' I think)

Are you using ALSA Drivers 1.0.10? Not the kernel drivers. The ones that come with the ALSA package.

There are two relevant *software* volume controls to consider: Master and PCM Media-players usually manipulate PCM without touching Master. First make sure your Master volume is not too low using aumix(ncurses) or xaumix.
Secondly it is possible that your speakers need power-supply for amplification which you have not connected. When I use my speakers without the A/C adapter and the speaker switch set to "OFF" position, I get just enough volume for one person to hear. The sound card o/p typically provides just enough power to drive ear-phones and not a ~100W speaker (which reminds me ... do you face same problem with earphones??).

i dont think its a power supply issue.. thx for the inputs..

This is very strange. I'd investigate(google) further on these lines. Could be a driver issue related to your particular hardware. Which audio-chipset/card do you have? Also, are you using ALSA or OSS drivers?

I was thinking.. Curently I am using the 2.6.8 .deb kernel version. Maybe that is the cause of the but I am not so sure. What if I do a fresh compilation of a new kernel like say 2.6.14? Will that help in any way? What options should I take care of when I am selecting the modules/drivers?

The first question I asked upon reading your problem was the version of your ALSA drivers. I am repeating it.

Did you try removing and reinstalling the alsa modules? In the PCQ Linux 2005 based on FC3 I had a problem of no sound. I removed the modules and reloaded fresh ones from the net. Then sound worked.

Rony.

Apoorva , Did you tryu killing the enlightment sound demon [$killall -9 esd] , from what I know the debian systems have the esd and they cause this peoblem . Also could you try playing the a audio cd through the default player . If you can hear the sound , then is certainly a the esd . I had this issue with a good bit of boxes thats i installed ubuntu for home use .PLease let me know , I am curious it to know is this happens to all debian based systems .

Check out your cable. It might be plugged into the wrong socket at the back of your comp. Have you tried playing songs in Windoze? Do they play well?

It was a hunch. BTW try using alsamixer at the command line. Turn up the main volume ;)

Hey , I had a similar problem with the old Ubuntu . Try killing the enlightentment sound demon . It takes over the system sound [$killall -9 esd]. Let me know if it works .
