hi i have upgraded Ubuntu 8.04 to Ubuntu 8.10 using Ubuntu 8.10 i386 dvd, upgrade was sucessful, but after restart (after upgrading to 8.10) its not showing my dvd writer.
What should i do now?

You should report a bug using launchpad.

1. Open the cabinet and ensure that all cables are connected properly. 2. If item 1 checks out OK, then does the device show up in the BIOS? 3. If item 2 checks out OK, can you insert some other LiveCD/DVD and boot?

Boot live into 8.10 and check if you are able to get everything up normally. Older systems (even P4) may not be compatible with 8.10.

Wow! and for what reason would an older P4 not be compatible with 8.10?
No idea but the live CD of Kubuntu and Ubuntu 8.10 will not boot beyond the initial graphical display showing a blank background and mouse arrow. Xbuntu 8.10 does boot fully till the desktop. Tried it with different media. The same media successfully loaded Kubuntu 8.10 on my Acer Aspire One via home made USB DVD drive.
Recently I downloaded the latest 2.6.27.8 kernel and compiled it. It somehow does not detect my IDE drives properly and I get kernel panic after initial text messages. However this is a different case and I am still looking into the reasons. Need to check the ide support in menuconfig
