hi , i am plannig to buy a new PC, and have problems reagarding the selection of processor.
I want a AMD Athalon XP( 1.8Ghz) processor(with 256MB DDRAM) but there have been rumours that the processor gets heated up and could hang the system.
My room is not well ventilated, only cooling source is Fan. In such a case would AMD give me a problem?
Has anyone worked with XP series processors and how was your experience? The machine would be used solely for Linux( thats why I want to get a cheap processor ).
Which MotherBoard is the best buy for AMD Athalon XP 1800 ? What i read form 'Digit' was, MSI KT4 Ultra(with VIA KT400 chipset) motherboard works great with AMD Athalon XP 2600.
If its not AMD then the only other choice is Intel P4(1.8Ghz), which is expensive.

Greetings,
It seems a bit off topic but since I have Athlon XP........!!!!!!!!
Although the Processor fan does make lots of noice the primary work that I do @ home is some basic surfing, desktop video processing/capture and lots of gaming even my house is not well ventilated but the nForce 1 chipset with AMD XP seems to be giving great results.
Rest the decision is yours......
Regards

Generally there are no problems but if you feel like being safe(r) here are a few hints :
1) Get a better CPU Fan aka volcano III,IV,V etc. These have higher RPM and better Heat Sinks. 2) Be careful not to mess up with the thermal paste
3) Software wise, use CPU coolers. I use lvcool to cool my Duron 1.2GHz processor and my normal temperatures are about 36-42 deg C when they can go upto 60 deg C easily. But this software (elf and win32 versions) works only with the VIA KT133 (or similar) series of mobos. I think they also have a version for the KT333 series.

The Asus NForce motherboard comes with a GForceII onboard and a NForce 6 channel dolby digital decoder. Costs about 4K.

Unless you have extreme processing requirements you may look at the Duron too. Gone are the days when you had to buy the best CPU available.
