I wanted to know whether ogg-vorbis files can be played in the ubiquitous MP3 players or the iPod? And on another tangent, are the MP3 players supported in Linux? What about cell-phones like Nokia 3250, N series, etc.? Are they completely locked in to the Nokia Suite?

Some players support Ogg. Some don't. The ipod does not.

Some of Samsung's MP3 players can also play OGG files. Check their website.

The iPod can play ogg vorbis if you replace the Apple firmware and install Rockbox in it. Rockbox is a Free firmware for iPods and many other music players which add many more features to the players. http://www.rockbox.org/ Regards, BG

Since you mention rockbox, I'll add in Ipod Linux ( http://ipodlinux.org/Main_Page ) .
This is far more better oriented towards ipods. And from what I have seen it has the capability to convert *some* non-video pods to video enabled pods, using mplayer.
It used mpd for music playback. Theoritically it should play back everything if you install the codec onto the drive.
It gives me an extra kick to watch the boot messages on an ipod.
Answering the original question - only some models of iriver play ogg by default. Rest require a better os. :)

I'll elaborate ... almost all low-end flash-based players (256/512MB) of iRiver play ogg files by default. But some of them can only be managed by proprietory Doze-ware (particularly T20/T30/some models of T10). The red words to look for with unsupported players is MTP (Media Transfer Protocol) and Janus. If specs *boast* of MTP/Janus support - better to stay away!!! OTH, if it claims UMS support you're safe.
IMO, the best bet in iRiver is the iFP-series (particularly iFP-795): http://www.iriverindia.com/listing.asp?mcid=25 These work out-of-the-box with linux; and there is an open-source driver too ( http://ifp-driver.sourceforge.net/ ); and a Rockbox port in-progress.
As far as the T10 is concerned, the latest versions released in USA/UK are MTP only - not sure about the version available in India!
If you wan't a high-end hdd-player (5-40GB) then iRiver is a lost cause. H10 which is available in India doesn't support ogg, and H1xx/H3xx which do aren't available :-(

iRiver is not exactly a lost cause as it does support firmware upgrades. I was able to get H340 to play .avi and divx files after firmware upgrades. Also after installing rockbox on the player, I was able to dual boot the player. I made a post on how to do it in easy steps.

You can get the firmware upgraded to korean version which are more advanced compared to the US version and get support for various formats. Also if you hang out on the misticriver forums they have good howtos on how to support new codecs with rockbox. So you might not just get support for ogg but also for FLAC, dirac and speex formats. But beware as rockbox builds are currently "beta quality" and my player used to crash once in a while. I would recommend the iRiver players as it is more hackable and less proprietary compared to the iPod.

Very nice :-) . But according to iriverindia.com, this model isn't officially available in India! That means it's not ubiquitous - and hence a lost cause in this context. BTW, what kind battery-life do you get with Rockbox as compared to [original] firmware?

... I'll second that.

Yeah. I bought it in the US. I am not sure about the availabilty in India. The battery life using rockbox is less as compared to the original firmware. I did not do a stress test though. Also other users on the forum said usage of battery will reduce with the new versions. I haven't used any of the latest builds.
