Hi, I have a Dell inspiron 510m laptop.
from lspci -v it shows.
000:00:1f.6 Modem: Intel Corp. 82801DB/DBL/DBM (ICH4/ICH4-L/ICH4-M) AC'97 Modem Controller (rev 01) (prog-if 00 [Generic]) Subsystem: Conexant: Unknown device 5422 Flags: bus master, medium devsel, latency 0, IRQ 7 I/O ports at d400 [size=256] I/O ports at d080 [size=128] Capabilities: [50] Power Management version
I installed slmodem modules. it gets the modem through alsa , & detected by wvdialconf , when below is run.
cartoon:~# slmodemd -c INDIA --alsa SmartLink Soft Modem: version 2.9.10 Feb 8 2005 14:54:01 symbolic link `/dev/ttySL0' -> `/dev/pts/2' created. modem `modem:1' created. TTY is `/dev/pts/2' Use `/dev/ttySL0' as modem device, Ctrl+C for termination.
But dialing doesnt work, there is no sound ( even after adjusting alsamixer settings - Phone) & it doesnt dial? What could be the problem. below is output of wvdial trying to dial vsnl ( 172226 )
cartoon:~# wvdial vsnl --> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.54.0 --> Initializing modem. --> Sending: ATZ ATZ OK --> Sending: ATX3M1L3 ATX3M1L3 OK --> Sending: ATQ0 L3 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0 ATQ0 L3 V1 E1 S0=0 &C1 &D2 +FCLASS=0 OK --> Modem initialized. --> Sending: ATDT172226 --> Waiting for carrier. ATDT172226 NO ANSWER --> Unknown dial response string. --> Disconnecting at Fri Feb 18 18:49:00 2005

Karunakar,
Nothing technical seems to be wrong. have you tried calling 172226 from the telephone at that time? is the phone line connected properly?

Actually I am facing the same problem with Suse 9.2 Professional on Acer TravelMate 290E. It has an internal modem Agre System AC'97 modem. I got the slmodem driver from the internet through some link on suse site (or may be on google, dont remember). It fails to dial. It works in windows from the same line and setup. I have not moved my email from windows to Linux due to this problem.

I have tested this modem on a few machine, it works using the above configuration. Visit http://cdb.novell.com for a hardware support database.

ATX1 string setting disables detection of dial tone and busy tone for modems. ATX2 detects dial tone but not busy tone. Maybe ATX1 could help.
